Project - Complete the master bath plumbing.
What Happened - Stepped off the joist and went through the downstairs ceiling.
Result - 2' x 2' hole.

Oh, wait. Wrong word.
Two words for you: wet sanding.
I've found using a damp sponge is way better than using traditional drywall sanding tools. Less dust, smooths things over better, a good deal all around.
Sorry about the hole.
